Emmerdale's Chas serious

In Emmerdale, Chas was viewed as ‘irredeemable’ following her affair with Al Chapman, but she’s tried to put the past behind her…

Following a difficult battle with cancer, Chas has now found happiness in the arms of swoony Doctor Liam Cavanagh.

But, has Chas finally been redeemed? Or, is she still a long way off?

Chas’ reputation ruined by Al affair

In 2022, an affair started up in the Dales that will unfortunately forever be embedded into our minds.

Chas cheated on poor, lovely Paddy for businessman Al Chapman (and she was about the only person in the village who actually liked him other than Kerry…)

Despite having an affair with Chas, Al still went ahead and got engaged to Kerry although it would’ve been very awkward to reject such a fabulous (and very public) proposal. It involved Kerry presenting Al with a rap.

We weren’t a huge fan of Al to begin with but Chas was somewhat likeable until she betrayed Paddy like she did. And, let’s not get us started on Faith.

When Chas’ mum Faith was dying of cancer, Chas missed her final moments because she was in bed with her secret lover. How gross.

Everything came to an abrupt end though when Al was dramatically killed by little Kyle during a gun showdown. What goes around, comes around.

Chas’ cancer journey

After her affair with Al, Chas lost a lot of respect from fellow villagers and soap viewers alike. It looked as though her selfish ways were never going to be redeemed.

However, some sympathy for the character was given as she was diagnosed with cancer at the start of this year.

After a moment of passion with Dr Liam, he found a bump in Chas’ breast. She then found out that she had triple-negative breast cancer.

After a double mastectomy, Chas’ strength and resilience was to be admired. But, was this enough to redeem her?

Chas and Liam’s romance on Emmerdale

On screen at the moment, Chas is pretty loved up with Liam after they both confessed their love for each other this week.

She seems to be happy, and the rest of the village has come a long way since the Chas and Al affair.

However, even though Chas and Liam seem like a good pairing, let’s not forget that they are both sneaking about to hide the truth from heartbroken Ella. Just another relationship Chas has been in that’s going to end up hurting someone then. Nothing new there.

Has Chas Dingle been redeemed?

The Emmerdale Insider team share their thoughts on whether they think Chas Dingle has been redeemed for her past behaviour. Who do you agree with?

Emmerdale Chas Dingle: Has she been redeemed?

Kerry Barrett, Freelance Writer

“I think Chas has been redeemed. When she mentioned how she hurt Kerry this week, I was genuinely surprised to have that reminder. Mind you, she seems to have been redeemed in the classic Emmerdale way of the previous bad behaviour being totally ignored – I’m not sure she’s really done anything to deserve it. Despite it all though, I really like Chas and I want her and Liam to make a go of things.”

Kaggie Hyland, Editor-in-Chief – Views on Chas in Emmerdale

“Well I don’t often disagree with Kerry, but I am definitely not Team Chas! One word: Paddy. The way she behaved when she had an affair with Al was a disgrace and nothing, NOTHING, can redeem her.  Acknowledging the pain you have caused someone else and not doing it again because you have evolved are two different things and I don’t believe Chas ever learns, and I think she will go on to hurt others again, because she is innately self-centred, and arrogant.

“I know I’m supposed to laud her complicated character and layered journey but she’s just not very likeable, and I mean I can’t find a tiny piece of likeability in her. She thinks she’s a little bit above everyone else and there really is nothing special about her. As for Chas’ pairing with Liam: it gives me low-level rage whenever I see them on screen together. I do fully appreciate she is an excellent character to have at the centre of village life, though!”

Carena Crawford, Managing Editor

“I don’t know how I feel about Chas – I can’t ever forget what the show did to her when she cheated with Al and hurt Paddy so badly. Not to mention her role in Liv’s death and her treatment of grieving Aaron. It was just so unnecessary and, I think, ruined her character forever. However, she has been through a lot with her cancer battle, is often the voice of reason, and I can’t help but feel a bit warm about her and Liam together. But maybe that’s just because Emmerdale so rarely has any happy couples, it’s a relief to see!”

Any hope for Chas in Emmerdale?

Tamzin Meyer, Assistant Soap Editor – Views on Chas in Emmerdale

“Chas destroyed her chances of redemption the moment she chose to prioritise Al over her own dying mother. I truly believe she’ll always be selfish no matter how much she tries to hide it. Even her relationship with Liam has already hurt Ella and that’s only just started getting off the ground. A miracle will be needed for Chas to ever be redeemed in my eyes.”

Laura Drury, Freelancer Writer

“Two years ago Chas was the most hated person in Emmerdale, but two years is a long time in Soapland and she’s worked hard to get back in the circle of trust. We all know Chas made some terrible mistakes, but she was made to pay for them. Now it’s time to move on. Chas’s recent cancer ordeal has proved just how short life can be and she deserves the happiness she’s found with dishy Doctor Liam.”
