Emmerdale's Chas, Al

Emmerdale tonight (Monday, November 18) saw Chas Dingle and half-brother Caleb Miligan having a heart-to-heart. As Caleb spoke about cheating, Chas made reference to Al Chapman.

As Caleb opened up about daughter Steph, he revealed that Steph’s bad behaviour when she was younger was down to him. He admitted that she’d caught him with another woman.

Caleb shared that he and this other woman had been colleagues. They were getting up to no good while working late together when Steph popped in. Chas then quipped: “Rule one of an affair, don’t get clumsy.”

Back in 2022, Chas famously had an affair with Al Chapman while she was still married to Paddy and Al was dating Kerry Wyatt. The affair was gradually discovered by numerous people, so perhaps Chas should have taken her own advice.

As the subject of Al comes up, we take a look back at his time in the Dales and his relationship with Chas.

Who was Al Chapman in Emmerdale?

Al was a bit of a conman, but that didn’t stop him having a lot of luck with the ladies. Arriving in Emmerdale in 2019 to see son Ellis, Al managed to seduce ex wife Jessie and the pair slept together, resulting in the end of her marriage to Marlon.

Al soon found himself involved in the murder of Graham Foster. Kim Tate offered him money to kill Graham. Someone got there first, but Al pretended he’d done it anyway in order to get the money.

He then started a relationship with Priya, but that came to an end when Debbie Dingle revealed that she’d been having an affair with Al.

Al of course also became sworn enemies with Cain Dingle – which is never a position you want to find yourself in, and it meant Al and the other Dingles clashed constantly.

Emmerdale: Al’s relationship with Chas

Originally, Al tried to seduce Chas as a way to get control over her pub. When Chas’s brother Cain found out about Al’s schemes, he kidnapped Al and threatened him. As you do.

The tension over the pub eventually spilled into passion. After comforting Chas over her mum Faith’s illness, the pair shared a kiss and an affair started between the pair, despite them both having other partners.

Chas even missed her mother’s final moments as she was away at a hotel with Al.

Despite Chas’s recent advice to Caleb to not be clumsy, Al and Chas were not careful and numerous people found out about the affair before Belle revealed all to Chas’s husband Paddy.

What happened to Al?

Given Al’s earlier affair with Cain’s daughter Debbie and Al’s intention to try take the pub from the Dingles, learning that Al was the reason Chas missed their mum’s final moments pushed Cain somewhat over the edge.

Cain grabbed a shotgun and lured Al to the barn. It looked as if he might shoot Al dead, but instead the two ended up fighting.

Cain’s young son Kyle wandered into the barn and upon seeing the fight, he panicked. He picked up the shotgun and aimed it at Al. Al then reached to grab the gun, but Kyle pulled the trigger and Al died from the impact.

Cain took the blame originally, before Kyle confessed to the crime. However, all charges were later dropped as Al’s death was ruled an accident.
